I see we're on the verge of letting lazy farmers and vets scapegoat badgers for the spread of TB in cattle by letting them slaughter a quarter of the UK's population.
I read the arguments in today's Independent, and I'm sick of bodies like the NFU displaying their utter contempt for the countryside. Badgers are a convenient excuse because, after all, it's not as if our wanton rape of the planet's natural resources have anything to do with it, is it? TB is spreading because of intensive farming methods and the widespread shipment of cattle over long distances. The best arguments against this disgusting action - which frankly reveal a new low in this country's government and farming community - came from a letter from a retired vet in today's Independent, which I somewhat ironically read while being herded on to the cattle truck that is rush hour London. Read it here.
The most disgusting comment I read in today's report from the Independent is the following, from the NFU Deputy President no less:
"There appears to be this emotional argument with very little consideration, if not no consideration, for the human cost."
What human cost? Farmers losing money because they can't run their business responsibly and sustainably? This "human cost" argument is used to justify every single thing we do. My argument against fox hunting is that these foxes were here a long time before we were - just like the badgers. Then we swan in, start breeding like rabbits on steroids, push the animal kingdom towards the margins of existence and - when that isn't enough - start complaining when they do what they've done for millennia in hunting and killing other animals. The difference between humans and these creatures is that they hunt to survive; we hunt for pleasure, or to sate our gluttony, because we refuse to share anything with anything else.
I wonder when mankind will wake up and realise he can't live on this planet while showing complete disregard for other creatures? Do you think it'll be when - all alone at last - we suddenly realise that we can't survive without them?
