UK and California join forces on climate change

The UK and the state of California have made an agreement to work together on combatting climate change (see here). While I applaud this decision - subject to it ever actually achieving anything, of course - I can't help but smirk at Blair's growing realisation that he'll be remembered for all the wrong reasons if he doesn't start doing more to combat climate change.

I do wonder if this deal is the beginning of the end of the United States. Governer Schwarzenegger is more than happy to cross swords with Bush over global warming, with phrases like "California will not wait for our federal government to take strong action on global warming", and "California has a responsibility and a profound role to play to protect not only our environment, but to be a world leader on this issue as well."

Way to go Arnie - if you keep this committment up (with actions as well as words - then again, apparently California has an ongoing energy crisis with frequent power cuts, so there is a pressing need for change), what price on a President Scchwarzenegger one day taking on global warming from the White House? Shame it'll probably be too late by then...

In related news, solar panels are now available through three Currys stores - prices are still very expensive (£9,000 to halve your electricity bill), but it's a welcome step in the right direction. Now I've topped up my emergency savings to a reasonable level I'm going to start saving towards alternative energy products.
