Just opened a jar of apple jelly jam, courtesy of my mum's apple tree. Lovely (I dread to think how much sugar is in there - it's very sweet!). I'd like to learn how to make jam next year - clearly apple jelly can now be added to my list of "home-made jams" to try. At present there's only one other on there: bramble jelly, but if I can strain out the pips, perhaps raspberry and strawberry might be on there too.
This whole "growing your own veg" lark is great fun - the sense of achievement when you bring home a couple of courgettes or a handful of potatoes is amazing. And all for £18 a year or whatever the allotment rent is. I'm heading down there again this morning to weed one of the beds and - if time/energy/inclination permits - continue digging a fourth. Our butternut squash experiment blossomed while we were away - clearly you need to plant lots of seeds together so when they flower they germinate each other and produce fruit. There's one very promising specimen growing fast, but I fear it's too late for this year: the leaves were turning yellow when I last visited, and I suspect it'll ultimately fail. Still, we know it can be done; next year we'll plant the seeds in late May as opposed to mid-July!
We managed to cut out virtually all processed food in our diet a while ago - the odd treat aside - but there was a report on The Money Programme of all things last night revealing just how many people are hooked on ready meals due to their busy lifestyle. If anyone saw how those processed meals are put together you might think twice about eating them in future. It's just a shame our society is so fast-paced that everything revolves around work - capitalism has never been so transparently exploitative as it is now. No wonder the thought of getting a proper job again frightens me - long may my freelance career continue!*
*That was the kiss of death wasn't it?
