I see Jonathan Ross prompted over 60 viewer complaints over his comments about stopping people on council estates having children (see here). Should I be mortally offended at his words, or should I worry that part of me actually agrees with him?
We live in a world with six billion people. That's more than double what it was 35 years ago. Our planet is starting to overheat and I have in the past compared our presence here to that of an infestation or even a cancer. When you hear of young girls of under 20 with three or more children by different fathers you have to realise that something is seriously wrong - especially when some see it as a means of getting their own flat or house. Our celebrity obsessed culture now believes it shouldn't have to work for a living, that we should all be able to live like Posh and Becks regardless of whether or not we can actually afford it (why pay now when you can eventually default later?).
So maybe part of me does agree with Jonathan Ross. But why stop at council estates? If I was in a position of power I'd actually penalise people for having more than two children. I'd certainly not hand out free council houses to those who think having kids is an easy option. Whatever happened to sex education and contraception anyway?
Maybe I'm just grouchy because two doors down had an incredibly loud outdoor karaoke party until 1.30am on Saturday night and that's occupied by a single parent. When did I start reading the Daily Mail?
