More digging

Hadn't managed to finish the bed I was digging over yesterday, so returned to the allotment for another hour's slog. I always feel a sense of achievement having dug a bed - Christ, it's the only meaningful exercise I get these days. There's something nice about seeing a bed lose its weeds and reveal beautiful chocolate-coloured soil. But you can't soak it up too much - you then notice the other beds require turning over too...

My mate Joe has written an eloquent piece on why people should stop worrying about the softness of bog roll and make sure they pick a recycled brand - see here. He's spot on when he concludes that our attitude to bog roll sums up our attitude to the entire planet.

As I was digging I was thinking about the bindweed that permeates our beds, although we do appear to have pulled out enough to keep it at bay now. To the best of my knowledge, bindweed doesn't actually contribute very much to the soil, and it made me think of another species that takes without giving back. You know who I mean, and I'm thinking that if there is cosmic karma out there then we're building up quite a nasty shock. I hope those who have gone from denying climate change exists to pretending it has nothing to do with man's impact on the environment get to see it first hand.
