The first step in cleaning up Politics...
... is discussed in this article (click
here) by Johan Hari that appeared in the Independent on 29th December. Basically, until we accept state funding of political parties we are never going to be able to keep them away from being corrupted by private donors. Hari uses the Corporate Manslaughter Act, which 65% of us want, as an example: three times Labour has proposed it, and three times it ditched it. Now it's finally produced a version so full of holes it's next to useless.
State funding of parties, allied with other electoral reforms, would not present that much of an extra burden on the taxpayer. In fact, you may even end up with a government that spends tax pounds wisely. Surely that's got to be better than the Tories slashing everything to save money while Labour raises taxes and spends it all on inefficiency?
