Blair's legacy

The Independent reports today that Tony Blair wants to devote time to lobbying the big three polluters to act positively on climate change when he steps down from power this summer (see here).

As with all politicians, I'll believe it when I see it. If he manages to do this, then great, but it's a shame his government set such a poor example with its own policies, with rampant house building and airport expansions just two ways in which it's undermined any practical attempts to curb our growing emissions.

I see that Britain's childrens come bottom in a UNICEF report on child well-being. However old the figures may or may not be, what do people expect? We live in a "I'm alright Jack" society that's somehow managed to avoid taking responsibility for its actions. Now parents expect teachers to do all the hard work of bringing up children for them, while governments make it harder and harder for schools to impose any kind of discipline. Our society is crumbling from all sides, and until people wake up and start taking responsibility for their own actions then nothing we do will make any difference.
