I'd be inclined to think the referee ignored the first challenge because Forssell stayed on his feet and in command of the ball, but when Roque Junior fell across him - inside the box - the ref blew for a separate foul. Of course, if it had happened at the other end I'd be arguing differently, but that's the beauty of contentious decisions.
There was a bit of luck with the penalty re-take too - I'd be unhappy if our keeper had been penalised in that way, but again, based on the rulebook, it should have been retaken. Both feet should be on or behind the line, which is why Andy Townsend's argument that Robinson was unlucky because one foot was behind the line misses the point entirely. The only major surprise here is that the linesman actually had the guts to flag it. Naturally Townsend tried to argue that the second penalty should have been retaken because Stan was encroaching, which he was, but behind the referee, who therefore wouldn't have seen the incident. I guarantee that had Villa been the receipient of that penalty decision he'd have found a way to support it.
The second goal was supposed to be controversial too, but both pundits elected to skip that, which is tantamount to saying Forssell received the ball in his own half and beat 11 men before scoring.
Ultimately we didn't play particularly well, but still limited Leeds to one clear-cut on-target chance, which Smith fluffed. We had chances ourselves too, which meant at 75 minutes the game was probably worthy of being 0-0. The rest may have been lucky, but I'll take that any day, especially as we were denied a stonewall penalty at Southampton and saw our keeper possibly fouled for Fulham's second goal the week before (never mind Darren Purse being sent off somewhat harshly - he shouldn't have put the referee in that position to make a decision in the first place). See? Decisions do iron themselves out over the course of a season, in which case we might yet be reasonable value for our 11 points, which officially constitutes our best-ever start at this level (yes, saddo here went through the history books last night).
