A slightly surreal result this. On the surface, Premiership side at home beats Championship side comfortably. Nothing strange in that, but it illustrates how times have changed in footballing terms. This represented the first time in four attempts that we beat Leeds in the FA Cup - we were beaten in the semis 3-0 back in 1972 when they went on to win it (for the first and only time I believe - I'm sure my mate Peter the Leeds fan will put me straight on that if I'm wrong!). The last time we played them in the Cup was in 98, when we lost 3-2. I remember it well, and not just because it was the day we got Jasper, our first cat. Blues were 2-0 down quite quick, and we pulled it back to 2-2 (Gary Ablett scoring our equaliser). Leeds then won it right at the death with a disputed goal from Jimmy Floyd Hassailbank, who was alleged to have elbowed his marker - the underrated Jon McCarthy - as he rose to head it home.
Saw the goals on TV - all well taken, and Darren Carter's brace suggests our defeat against Bolton on Tuesday night was as much down to his absence than Robbie Savage's. It would be nice if Blackburn could offer a sensible amount for Savage, because I think we've found his replacement. Whatever happens with the Robbie Savage saga, the disturbing cult that seemed to have sprung up where people fooled themselves into thinking he was our talisman have surely come to an end, which can only be good for Birmingham City FC. Now Blackburn, how about offering 2.7m up front, instead of offering one third of that up front, with the rest spread out over years dependent on success?
