The Liberal Democrats have accused various Green groups of cosying up too much to the government (see here). The fact that environmentalism is so far down the agenda these days (and the Labour minister who claims it's proof that the government has got its green policies correct is living in cloud cuckoo land) would lend weight to that claim.

I like the Greens' response. Let's attack the Liberal Democrats as hypocrites, because, acccording to its principal speaker, "Despite their green fig leaf, they share exactly the same commitment to a neo-liberal big business agenda as the other mainstream parties." That's as maybe, but if the Lib Dems are an irrelevance as many seem to think, why don't you target the government a bit more effectively? The fact is that environmental concerns have dropped off the radar - Blair made a lot of airy fairy promises when he was first elected that he hasn't kept, one of those being electoral reform. Only when a party is elected to power that changes the electoral system so everyone has a voice can further reform - especially in the environmental arena - be pushed for effectively.

But no, the Greens have to squabble with the Lib Dems instead. Nice one, lads and lassies. Ignore the damning charge that your environmental friends have got into bed with the government and instead target the one party that is genuinely different. Oh well, you just lost any lingering chance you had of my vote in May...
