I've known this - and struggled with it - for a while, but air travel is the single biggest cause of global climate change, and - as always - it's the Independent (the Guardian is also running climate change today, but not this particular story) rather than any of the other papers who is commenting on it. It "cost" me five trees from Future Forests to cover the cost of our flights to, from and within the United States, and Canada will cost another four in September.
As those who are calling for higher prices point out, there's nothing massively wrong with using planes for special occasions (Cav and Clare's honeymoon to the US being a case in point). Even once a year might be acceptable, but twice (three times if you point out that our last trip to Vancouver took place less than 12 months before our final trip to Canada in September) is clearly not good enough for someone who professes to put great stock in climate change and environmental responsibility.
We had no firm plans for a foreign holiday next year, but if we do go abroad, I think it'll have to be to Europe, and not on a plane... The full report is here.
