Johann Hari printed a superb article in The Independent today about how David Blunkett is targeting the poor once again in his attempt to hit out at the nation's "scroungers". As Hari has discovered, we would do far better to go after the super-rich - did you know that News International, Rupert Murdoch's company, has not paid a single penny of corporation tax for more than a decade, despite its profits topping £300m. The Tax Justice Network claims that a whopping $860bn is lost worldwide through the rich's tax-avoidance schemes.
Read the full article here, and then ask yourself why we continue to vote in politicians who sweep this major problem under the carpet. Perhaps tax rises aren't necessary after all - but then for that to be true people should start paying their fair share of tax in the first place.
