Looks like our petition has stirred up a hornet's nest, according to Blues co-owner David Sullivan (see here). I've had to read a lot of crap from Birmingham City supporters over the past few days, which - at its most extreme - suggests that it doesn't matter one jot what Bowyer does off the pitch so long as he does the business on it. Clearly they feel there is no line to be drawn, certainly not here. So where do you draw the line? Or shall we start trawling maximum security prisons next for talent we can then exclude from normal rules?
These same fans - clearly following the line taken by their club - do not care what Bowyer does off the pitch. I'm sorry, but I do. Besides, it's not as if he's exactly a shining example on it, is it? He's been built up into a kind of messiah - something he's clearly not. Bowyer is divisive, and has been at all the clubs he's played at. None of the clubs he's been at - with the exception of Charlton, who sold him in 1996 - have exactly prospered long term.
There is a bubble of unreality around football that needs to be pricked. Maybe this incident might start to see standards raised.
