Just when you think they can't sink any lower

There is gutless. There is embarrassing. And then there is Birmingham City.

Tonight we're currently playing in our first FA Cup Quarter Final for 22 years. We have never won this trophy. It is now half time, and the only surprise is that the score is just Birmingham City 0, Liverpool 3.

Funny how we've scored nil. Must be something to do with the number of shots on goal we've fashioned. One, with the last kick of the half, which went harmlessly wide by the six-yard line.

You look at the players out there, and we are told that on paper we should not be where we are. They blame injuries, yet we have an annual wage bill of £30m. Yes, we pay our professional footballers a combined sum of £30m to play the way they've played tonight, the way they've played all season. They make pub footballers look classy, committed, clued up.

My feelings about the manager are well known and well documented. When you're 2-0 down after less than four minutes thanks to some atrocious defending you know that all you're doing is reinforcing the "manager out" feeling you've had on and off for nearly two years. Yet the players must take the stage and acknowledge their part in all of this.

They're sleepwalking out there, sauntering around the park. They find it difficult to pass the ball to their own team mates - even if they outnumber the opposition in a particular part of the field. The second half is about to start - I confidently predict that we will have conceded at least five by the end of play, that we are not going to score a goal, and that this performance is just the beginning of what is to come: that, against all odds we are actually going to get worse this season.
