Blue Savannah in London and Birmingham

What a night - Erasure's acoustic set (more like country and western) was fantastic, and it was a bonus to learn that the set has been recorded on to CD, which we'll definitely be purchasing. Good job too, as once again the late start and last train forced us to leave before the encore.

I spent a lot of time during the set - as promised, dear reader - checking Blues' progress on my mobile phone. I'm sure mobile Internet has been around for a relatively long time, but it made a difference!

The first shock of the night: Blues 1 (Nicky Butt 62), Blackburn 0. Erasure launched into a fabulous version of Victim of Love and I'm afraid despite all my best efforts over the past few months I started dreaming of survival, of signing Butt permanently and holding on to our bigger players. That once again Blues might just pull off another great escape to rival the glory days of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

I was dragged back down to Earth as another furtive check (thank goodness we were seated throughout - the Shepherd's Bush Empire's seats aren't designed for standing) flashed up Blues 1, Blackburn 1 (Savage 78). Of course it would be Savage who would seal our fate.

And then an even better version of Blue Savannah started, and a final furtive glance - it was now 9.45pm - suddenly flashed up Birmingham 2, Blackburn 1. No goalscorer, no confirmation that the match had finished, but by the end of the song there it was in blue and white: Mikael Forssell, 87 minutes. From open play. And it was all over!

Andy Bell has a fantastic voice, and Erasure had assembled a superb backing band (normally it's just Andy and Vince Clarke up there). The set got better and better, and we left after two of my favourites - Stop and Chains of Love - were given the country treatment. I dreamed of playing these songs on the side of a mountain and savoured the moment. Blues were on 32 points, out of the relegation zone and still clinging on like the Blues of old.

According to one poster this morning on SHA (see here), it was all good. If Forssell really is about to rediscover his scoring touch then he needs to bang in four in the next three games - it would be heartbreaking if we'd nursed him back to fitness only to watch some other Premiership club poach him if/when we go down.

But don't worry Fate - I'm still waiting for the final blow. This is Birmingham City FC we're talking about!
