Now don't get me wrong - if the price of Blues staying up was England's early elimination from the World Cup then I'd be presenting myself to Essex's finest yeomanry to be burned at the stake for treachery, but as the price of us moving last year was fixed with fate as Blues' being relegated from the Premier League this season (I'll be heading off to Brum shortly to present myself to Birmingham's finest to be burned at the stake for yada yada yada), I might as well take an interest in the part-time recipients of my footballing affections.
Scolari sounds like a good choice: he's won the World Cup playing defensive football with Brazil, and guided current charges Portugal to the Euro 2004 final before capitulating to the unfancied Greeks. But it's not all good news. Scolari appears to be his own man - he ditched Portugal's entire back four after one game at Euro 2004, which suggests he might pick players based on their ability and not their attachment to specific fashionable clubs in London or the North West. He also bemoans his "poor" English, which sounds better than many British people to my untrained ear. He even once punched a journalist for asking him a question - with a bit of luck he'll carry that on into his next job should he turn up as England manager come August.
