Then it was off to Layer Road at 2.30pm to see Colchester play Brentford at home in League One. Colchester have been on a poor run - just two league goals in the past eight games prior to this match - and when Brentford went 1-0 up in the sixth minute it looked ominous. The U's clawed their way back though and equalised from a corner in the 31st minute. Brentford then retreated into their shell and one of the most one-sided second halves I've ever seen live ensued. Colchester spurned a host of chances and the match ended 1-1. Both Emma and Paul enjoyed it though - I suspect we might be able to tempt them up again this season or next before the U's move to their new ground in late 2007.
Back home for a Chinese meal - once again a meal for two was more than ample for four - and copious amounts of wine. Net result: an evening of karaoke and Buzz on the PS2. We also signed up for a trip to Ascot in July for a day's horse racing - Paul has hired a coach and 30-40 of us will be descending on there for a day's fun and small-time betting. Again my limit will be £1 or maybe £2 per race.
This morning we took our time getting going and headed off to Mersea Island for a walk along the coast and a stop in a local cafe where we snacked on cake and coffee and then Paul and I grabbed some local beer to give it a try. I've settled for the local stout and pale ale, and will be interested to see how it tastes when I next feel in the mood for a beer. They also produce a local wine, so we'll be back to try that at a later date too.
Emma and Paul have just left, I've got to finish off a bit of work and then we'll spend an hour or so at our allotment beginning the process of turning over the soil. Toni starts work in her second new job tomorrow and once again we're left feeling very content living in this part of the UK.
