Sadly this isn't the joyous news that Tony Blair has spontaneously exploded into a puff of mushroom-shaped smoke, but the news he's going to firmly weigh in on expanding the UK's nuclear programme (see here).
Let's ignore the rights and wrongs of this argument such as discussing Blair's claim that he'd be remiss if he failed to take long-term decisions (that opens a can of worms in itself, but to be fair deciding to go nuclear is definitely a long-term decision - just leave a note asking people 10,000 years down the line about that one).
Instead, I'm going to replicate this quote from his official spokesman, who predicts there will be "despairing shrieks of outrage" at his announcement. Excuse me? What kind of comment is that? It sounds like Blair is quite smug about this decision. Nuclear isn't some magic solution to our problems - or at least, the thousands of generations left to deal with the fallout won't think so - so what kind of quote is that to make?
Oh sorry, what am I thinking? Apparently an increasing number of people between the ages of 20 and 30 don't know the difference between right and wrong. Well, with Tony's government setting such a fine example, are any of us truly surprised?
