Champions League Final

I watched this sandwiched between episodes two and three of the Doctor Who classic 'City of Death' (the second ever Who adventure I can remember watching as a kid; "Destiny of the Daleks' was the first, but moving swiftly on...).

Arsenal were a tad unlucky in that they had their best spell of the game just before Barcelona scored their equaliser. You might argue they were also unlucky in that the referee couldn't wait to blow his whistle instead of letting Barca score and booking Lehmann for his challenge on E'to.

However, I shan't shed too many tears for Arsenal. I've faced such heartbreak too many times with Blues to count, and I've never had a stack of domestic triumphs (never mind recent domestic triumphs) to fall back on!

The referee had a poor game, but while the Arsenal players - led magnificently by their manager who cannot wait to complain while ignoring decisions that go in his club's favour (like the dubious free kick that led to Arsenal's opening goal) - moaned, I was reminded of the number of times they've manipulated referees. Robert Pires is a diver par excellence, and histrionics are never far away where many Arsenal players are concerned.

I suspect Spurs fans - feeling robbed because Arsenal took fourth spot on the last day when their own players suffered from food poisoning at the team hotel - aren't that concerned with Arsenal's pain. In fact, one of them has already mocked up a superb Mastercard ad - see here. Note there is a rude word in there (the 'f' one), so view with care!
