For those keeping count, last night we harvested another load of potatoes, which are now stored away in the shed in a cardboard box, ready for eating over the next few months. We also picked two more courgettes - that's eight in total I think from the two plants that we planted this year. We've had a small number of french beans and peas, plus salad from a plant that mum gave us - you literally pull it off to eat it, and it grows back ready for your next meal.
I'm really happy that we got the allotment - not only do we get a little closer to nature, we're learning practical skills about growing food and discovering what seasonal eating is like all over again. It's easy to forget that it wasn't that long ago (25 years maybe?) that people still ate according to what was available. Nowadays people can eat anything they like 365 days of the year - sounds fantastic, but we're paying a heavy price for that convenience, as well as taking food from areas of the world that need it more than we do (I was shocked to discover the stir fry we bought from Sainsbury's originated in Kenya)...
