We ploughed the 276 miles up the motorway on Friday afternoon/evening to our good friends Martin and Lynn to attend their 10th wedding anniversary on Saturday evening. A good time was had by all, and I was reacquainted with Lancaster for the first time in three years. To be honest, nothing much has changed (I didn't check out the campus, which I'm reliably informed bears little or no resemblance to how it did 12 years ago when I graduated - 12 years!). For me the big changes came after I initially left - the bus route numbers were altered, and new areas sprang up on campus within 18 months. It was fitting, considering the huge changes I was going through personally at the time and that particular visit helped draw a line under that chapter of my life.
Anyway... the music was good (Lynn chose the entire playlist, so there were no dud tracks to be heard - Toni loves to boogie, so I "generously" accompanied her to songs we both liked - she got Billy Idol, and I got a-ha and Queen), as was the food and company. We isolated ourselves a little bit last year during the move, so it's good to start reacquainting ourselves with old friends again, and Martin and Lynn are two of the very best. Hopefully we'll be entertaining them in Essex before the end of the year!
I've worked out that the cost of travelling in the car wasn't much less than buying super advance tickets on the train, so next time we visit them (a threat AND a promise!) we'll definitely take the choo-choo. Lancaster's a lovely place, and it's good to have a reason to visit there still.
