Thought for the Day

Yes, I like a good rant. Yes, I don't think the prognosis for the human race is very good, even though as a species we have so much potential that we're currently wasting in disappearing up our own backsides with our selfish thoughts and actions. Jehovah's Witnesses believe we're in the last days of mankind, and if you read selected parts of Revelations you'd be hard-pressed to disagree with the description of humanity that's painted there. But the difference between my world view and theirs is that I believe it's our responsibility to deal with the problems we've created for ourselves; they seem to think it's a case of spreading the word while they wait for judgement from on high to be made.

I can't agree with this dismal world view, however pessimistic I sound in many of my blog posts. I think of Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek, where in the future mankind rises above its pettiness, ditches its love of capitalism and strives to better itself - we're tolerant of each other, not looking out for number one and we accept responsibility for what we do.

I'd hate to think that in the end - if we are to be judged by some God or godly being - we'll all be assessed on which religious club we decided to back instead of our thoughts and actions. I quite like the idea of reincarnation - what a kick in the teeth that would be for so many of us, if we had to come back and deal with the consequences of our own selfishness in a later life. Cosmic karma? You betcha.
