At last, a Labour minister with bite

Environment minister Ian Pearson has savaged airlines - especially my personal favourite Ryanair - in an outspoken interview in today's Guardian (see the BBC's coverage here).

Ryanair's response is to claim its the greenest airline, and yet its chief executive has already said its emissions will keep rising. I don't know what Ryanair is on, but clearly it doesn't give a monkey's about the future of the planet it's living on. Pearson sums it up perfectly: "When it comes to climate change, Ryanair are not just the unacceptable face of capitalism, they are the irresponsible face of capitalism."

Sadly, Ryanair and the air industry as a whole aren't solely culpable in this regard. Scratch the surface of today's capitalism and you'll find most of it is irresponsible and unacceptable. But don't direct all your ire at the companies, take a good look at the neighbours on your street. And even glance in your own home. We're all guilty of turning capitalism into the climate-changing monster it's become.

At least I can predict what will happen next: the airlines will close ranks and the government will back away to leave Mr Pearson conspicuously isolated over this. When will we see real leadership in this country again, eh?
