The price of rice up by 70 per cent

This perhaps is the most damaging thing about the continued debate over global warming - changes in the climate are just one facet of how we're leading unsustainable lives. The BBC's report on the soaring cost of rice (see here) mentions the fact demand is now outstripping supply, and also refers to the rising costs of other food staples like wheat, corn and soy beans.

This means higher food prices for everyone, but while we in the west might grumble because we can no longer gorge ourselves on cheap food (who knows, maybe people will start cutting back to the extent they're not binning up to a third of the food they buy?), those rising costs could have much deadlier consequences for the world's poor or rely on those basic food stuffs to survive.
