... Forget about the era of cheap food, it appears the era of cheap fuel is also over. Today's Independent reports on soaring costs for travel and energy - see here. While I won't shed any tears for air travellers, it does seem that the oil companies are already profiteering along with financial speculators. We need to curb our consumption of food and fuel, but it can't be done overnight. Having said that, if prices were to increase more gradually as supply is outstripped by demand, would we simply absorb those costs as opposed to being forced to change our behaviour? Perhaps there will be a silver lining to this cloud after all - if we can afford it.
Sadly it looks like we're between a rock and a hard place. No cheap credit, bills soaring out of control - so where do we find the cash to change to a more sustainable way of living? Solar, wind and other renewable forms require substantial investment on our part, but if the money's already been swallowed up, what then? If only governments had had the foresight to see this coming and act while there was still time, but like the rest of us, they react rather than act pro-actively...
