Someone tell the terrorists...

... they won. Today's Times (see here) reports that the government is planning to spend £12bn to allow GCHQ to spy on everyone's email, web browser history and phone records.

When the events of 11th September, 2001 occurred, the terrorists were sending out a message that they wanted to destroy our way of life. It seems like with every passing piece of legislation that restricts our privacy and freedoms they move closer to that goal.

In other news, George Monbiot reveals that today's average American car is less fuel efficient than the original Ford Model T. And US and European car manufacturers continue to block any efforts towards forcing them to improve their fuel efficiency and carbon footprints (see here).

Every day it feels like I've slipped into a parallel universe where greed, incompetence and indifference rules. I'm beginning to wonder whether the day I experienced my Sliders moment was 1st May, 1997.
