Listening to Sir Menzies Campbell defending the Lib Dems position on the Iraq war this morning, I felt he missed the opportunity to make the most damning point of all. As I heard an Iraqi minister telling us we should be proud of our actions in Iraq, I couldn't help but feel for the people living under oppressive regimes that don't have oil underneath them.
The fact is, Blair either lied or allowed himself to be lied to in order to find any reason to justify backing the US's unilateral stance over Iraq. For me, it should be all or nothing: either you pledge to remove all dictators from power, or none. To do so for such blatantly transparent reasons such as oil, and then sit there looking all smug and self-satisfied while millions are left to suffer elsewhere, is - well - the realities of the 21st Century, isn't it?
Mind you, even if the US decided to bring down all dictatorships in favour of democracy, it hardly sets the best example of it, does it? A country run by big business - particularly oil - for big business.
